Farms

Washington's farms are at the heart of our food system, nourishing communities, promoting environmental resilience, and supporting hunger relief.

green-background.png

Washington contains a remarkable concentration of agricultural talent, from the Skagit Valley's berries and vegetables to Yakima Valley’s orchards and urban-edge farms of the greater Seattle metro.

Yet the realities of farming- prohibitive land prices, inflation, climate pressures, and rising labor costs- are making it increasingly difficult for farmers to earn a sustainable living.

Growing For Good (GFG) supports small farms across Washington by providing upfront payment in spring, allowing investment in seeds, soil amendments, and equipment before the growing season. Pre-harvest contracts reduce financial risk and enable crop planning.

Since 2020, GFG farmers have recieved $962,605 in contracts with hunger relief organizations. These funds support the farms in stewarding the land and feeding our communities.

"Our mission is to provide healthy food for our community. We are a community driven small organic farm. We love providing food to food banks, knowing the customers are receiving the best food we can grow, and as fresh as one day harvest.

We understand that without programs such as Growing for Good, the grocery store donation selection might be their customers only source of fresh vegetables, Growing for Good is doing great work. We are honored and grateful to be a part of the program.”

“At Viva Farms, the most vulnerable businesses are those in their earliest years of production, and partnering with GFG has helped us strengthen those businesses. We send tailored availability lists of produce from the smaller farms and farms in their earliest years of participation and try to prioritize selling their produce because they have fewer market outlets and need the boost the most. This is a wonderful collaboration and massively helpful.”

“It's really important to me that our farm grow food for people at all income levels. We know that market and farm stand customers skew toward a high socioeconomic status, and the Growing for Good program was a wonderful entry point for us to be able to start providing food to food bank customers who otherwise would be less likely to access our produce.”
